Chiropractic for Children in Jacksonville: What Parents Should Know

Parents ask me about their kids all the time. Usually it comes up during their own visit. “Could this help my son’s headaches?” “My daughter keeps getting ear infections. Is that something you see?” “My teenager plays three sports and his neck is always sore.” These are good questions, and they deserve honest answers rather than a sales pitch.
This post is for parents in Mandarin, San Jose, Fruit Cove, and across Jacksonville who are wondering whether chiropractic care makes sense for their child. I will explain what care for kids looks like in my office, the concerns parents most often bring to me, when your pediatrician should come first, and what to expect at a first visit. I see children of all ages, from infants through teenagers, and every exam and adjustment is adapted to your child’s age and size.

Why a Child’s Spine Is Worth Paying Attention To
Children are not small adults. Their bones, joints, and muscles are still growing, and their bodies adapt quickly, which is one reason kids bounce back from so much. It also means that small imbalances can shape how they sit, stand, and move as they grow.
Think about what a child’s neck goes through. A baby’s head is large and heavy compared to the rest of their body. Toddlers learning to walk fall constantly. School-age kids tumble off playground equipment, carry heavy backpacks, and spend hours looking down at tablets and phones. Teenagers tackle, dive, flip, and collide in sports. Most of those bumps are harmless. Occasionally, though, a fall or collision can leave the upper neck slightly out of position, and a child’s body will quietly adapt around it.
My work focuses on the atlas, the top bone in the neck, which balances the head and surrounds the brainstem. If you are new to this approach, my patient guide to upper cervical chiropractic explains the basics.
How Care for Children Is Different
Gentler Than Most Parents Picture
When parents hear “chiropractor,” many picture someone twisting and cracking a neck. That is not what I do for anyone, and certainly not for children. I use Upper Cervical Orthospinology, an instrument-assisted technique with no twisting or cracking. For adults, the force is comparable to light pressure on the tip of your nose. For children, I adjust it to their size, so it is often even lighter. Most kids feel very little and are surprised at how quickly it is over.
An Exam That Fits Your Child’s Age
Every child gets a careful exam before I recommend anything. I look at posture, head position, how the neck moves, and whether the shoulders and hips sit level. I take X-rays as needed, based on your child’s age, history, and exam findings, and I will always explain why before we take them.
Short Visits, Explained Step by Step
You are welcome to stay with your child for every visit. Visits for children are short, and I explain each step before I do it so your child knows what to expect. I want kids to feel safe and comfortable here, and I want you to understand exactly what I am doing and why.
Adjusting Only When It Is Needed
I check alignment at every visit, but I only adjust when the spine actually needs it. A visit where your child does not need an adjustment is a good sign, not a wasted trip.
Concerns Parents Commonly Bring to Me
Recurring Ear Infections
This one is personal for me. As an adult, I had 30 ear infections in 36 months, and a surgeon recommended ear tubes. One upper cervical adjustment changed the course of that for me, and it is the reason I became a chiropractor. You can read more on my page about Dr. O and her background.
Because of that story, many parents of children with repeated ear infections find their way to my office. I want to be honest with you: research on chiropractic for children’s ear infections is limited, and my experience as an adult patient does not guarantee anything for your child.
What I can do is check whether the upper neck may be part of the picture. Your pediatrician or ENT should stay involved, and your child should keep following the treatment plan they recommend. I go into more detail in my post on ear infections and chiropractic for Jacksonville parents and on my ear infection relief page.
Headaches
Headaches are common in school-age kids and teens. Screen time, posture, sports, poor sleep, skipped meals, and not drinking enough water can all play a part, and so can tension at the top of the neck. When a child’s headaches seem to start at the base of the skull or travel with neck stiffness, it is worth checking the upper neck. My headache relief page explains how the neck and headaches are connected.
Some headaches in children need a pediatrician right away. I list those warning signs further down this post.
Posture, Backpacks, and Screens
Many kids spend hours a day with their heads tipped forward over a phone, tablet, or laptop, then carry a heavy backpack on one shoulder. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a backpack weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of a child’s body weight and that kids use both straps. Simple habits like those make a real difference.
If you notice that one of your child’s shoulders sits higher than the other, or their head always tilts to one side, it may be a posture habit, an upper neck issue, or something else entirely. Uneven shoulders and hips can also be signs of scoliosis, which should be evaluated by your pediatrician and, when needed, an orthopedic specialist. I will tell you if I see anything that needs that kind of follow-up.
Sports Injuries and Active Kids
Jacksonville kids stay busy with football, soccer, cheer, gymnastics, baseball, and swim. Falls and collisions are part of the game, and sore necks and backs often follow. If your child keeps complaining of neck pain or stiffness after practice, a gentle exam can help sort out what is going on.
One important note: any possible concussion must be evaluated by a physician, and your child should follow their return-to-play guidance. Chiropractic care does not replace that, and I do not clear children to return to sports after a head injury.
After a Car Accident
When a family is in a car accident, parents often get checked and forget that the kids in the back seat went through the same forces. Children may not have words for what feels wrong.
If your family has been in a collision, my page on car accident injury treatment in Jacksonville explains what to watch for, and your child should be checked by their pediatrician first.
When to See Your Pediatrician First
Chiropractic care is never a substitute for medical care when a child is sick or hurt. Call your pediatrician, or go to urgent care or the emergency room, if your child has:
A fever of 100.4°F or higher in a baby younger than 3 months
Fever with a stiff neck, a rash, or unusual sleepiness or irritability
A headache that wakes them from sleep, is worse in the morning with vomiting, or comes with changes in vision, balance, speech, or behavior
Any head injury followed by loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, confusion, or unusual drowsiness
Ear pain with a high fever, drainage from the ear, or swelling behind the ear
Back pain with fever, weight loss, pain that wakes them at night, or numbness or weakness in the legs
For a true emergency, call 911. If you are ever unsure, start with your pediatrician. I would much rather you do that than wait.
What to Expect at Your Child’s First Visit
Your child’s first visit is a complimentary consultation. We talk through your child’s health history, including birth, milestones, falls or injuries, sports, ear infections or headaches, and anything your pediatrician has already found. Please bring any records or test results you have.
From there, I explain what I see in plain language and give you an honest answer about whether I think I can help. If I think your child needs a different kind of care, I will tell you. You are never under any pressure to start care, and you can take time to think it over or talk with your pediatrician first.
Working Alongside Your Child’s Pediatrician
Your pediatrician knows your child’s overall health better than anyone, and I see my role as complementary to theirs. I want to know what they have found and what they recommend, and I am glad to share my findings with them. When everyone caring for your child is on the same page, you get a clearer picture of what is going on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is chiropractic care safe for children?
The care I provide for children is very gentle. There is no twisting or cracking, and the force is adjusted to your child’s size, comparable to light pressure on the tip of your nose or less. I start with a careful exam, and if anything suggests your child needs a pediatrician or specialist first, I will tell you.
What age can a child see a chiropractor?
I see children of all ages, from infants through teenagers. The exam and the adjustment are always adapted to your child’s age and size.
Will my child need X-rays?
X-rays are taken as needed, based on your child’s age, history, and exam findings. If I recommend them, I will explain why before we take them, and you can ask any questions you have.
Can chiropractic help my child’s recurring ear infections?
Research on chiropractic for children’s ear infections is limited, so I do not promise results. What I can do is check whether the upper neck may be part of the picture. Your pediatrician or ENT should stay involved, and your child should keep following their treatment plan.
Should my child see a pediatrician before a chiropractor?
For fever, a new or severe headache, a head injury, ear pain with high fever or drainage, or any symptom that worries you, see your pediatrician first. For ongoing concerns like recurring neck soreness or posture questions, you can start with either, and I am glad to work alongside your pediatrician.
Do you bill insurance for children’s visits?
San Jose Chiropractic is a direct-pay office and does not bill insurance, apart from Medicare. No referral is needed, and your child’s first visit is a complimentary consultation.
Have a Question About Your Child?
Many parents first come in for their own care and ask about their kids during that visit. That is a perfectly good way to start. Whether you live in Mandarin, San Jose, Fruit Cove, or elsewhere in Jacksonville or St. Johns County, I am happy to talk through your child’s situation and give you an honest answer. No pressure, no commitment, just answers.
