If you have been dealing with headaches, migraines, vertigo, neck pain, TMJ, or symptoms that have not responded to other treatments, the top of your spine may be the piece that has been missing.

At San Jose Chiropractic in the Mandarin area of Jacksonville, Dr. Thuraia Owais (Dr. O) specializes in upper cervical chiropractic care — a precise, gentle approach that focuses on the top two vertebrae in the neck and their influence on the brainstem and nervous system.

She is the only chiropractor in Mandarin certified in this technique, and fewer than 1% of chiropractors in the United States have advanced training in upper cervical care.

A Different Approach From the Top Down

Most chiropractic care addresses the spine from bottom to top, adjusting wherever misalignments are found. Upper cervical chiropractic takes the opposite approach. It focuses first — and primarily — on the Atlas (C1) and Axis (C2), the top two vertebrae in the neck, which sit directly beneath the brainstem.

The brainstem controls balance, muscle tone, blood pressure, digestion, immune response, and virtually every automatic function in the body. Every signal traveling between the brain and the body must pass through this area first. When the Atlas or Axis is even slightly out of position, it can create interference in that communication pathway — producing symptoms that may seem completely unrelated to the neck.

By correcting alignment at the top of the spine, the nervous system can function without that interference. In many cases the rest of the spine begins to realign naturally as a result, without needing to be directly adjusted.

The specific technique Dr. O uses is called Orthospinology, a highly precise form of upper cervical chiropractic that uses specialized X-ray analysis to calculate the exact correction needed for each patient's individual anatomy.

Conditions Commonly Addressed at San Jose Chiropractic

Upper cervical misalignment can contribute to a wide range of conditions because of the brainstem's influence on so many systems in the body.

Patients come to San Jose Chiropractic from across Jacksonville, Mandarin, and San Jose for help with:

This does not mean upper cervical care is a treatment for every condition on this list, or that it will produce the same results for every patient. What it means is that the nervous system controls all of these functions — and when the Atlas is misaligned, the body is not operating at its full potential. Correcting the Atlas gives the body the best possible environment to heal.

No twisting or cracking.

The upper cervical adjustment is one of the gentlest corrections in all of chiropractic. The pressure involved is about what you would use to check a piece of fruit for ripeness. Patients who have been nervous about chiropractic are consistently surprised by how comfortable it feels.

Imaging before and after every adjustment.

Before Dr. O adjusts any patient, she takes specialized X-rays to determine the exact position of the Atlas and Axis. After the adjustment, post-X-rays confirm the correction was made. Nothing is based on guesswork.

Adjustments only when the spine needs it.

At San Jose Chiropractic, Dr. O checks your alignment at every visit but only adjusts when the spine has actually shifted out of position. The goal is to help the body hold its correction for longer and longer periods of time. A visit where no adjustment is needed is a sign of progress, not a wasted appointment.

A top-down approach that addresses root causes.

Rather than chasing symptoms throughout the spine, upper cervical care identifies whether the foundation is stable first. When the Atlas and Axis are in proper position, many downstream symptoms resolve on their own.

Dr. O did not discover upper cervical chiropractic through a textbook. She discovered it as a patient.

While working as a pharmacy technician and preparing for pharmacy school, she developed a pattern of chronic ear infections — 30 of them over 36 months. A surgeon recommended tubes in her ears. Instead, she tried upper cervical chiropractic. After one adjustment, the ear infections stopped. Her migraines resolved. Her blood pressure, which had been climbing, normalized on its own.

That experience changed the direction of her life and led her to Palmer College of Chiropractic, where she graduated in 2011. She returned to Jacksonville, pursued advanced certification in Orthospinology, and built San Jose Chiropractic around the technique that changed her own health. Today she is the only chiropractor in the Mandarin area offering this level of upper cervical care.

Your first appointment at San Jose Chiropractic begins with a thorough evaluation — not an adjustment. Dr. O will take a detailed health history, perform a neurological and orthopedic assessment, and take specialized upper cervical X-rays to see exactly what is happening at the top of your spine.

Based on those findings she will explain what she found and whether upper cervical chiropractic is likely to help your specific situation. If it is, she will outline a care plan tailored to your anatomy and your goals. If it is not, she will tell you honestly and point you in the right direction.

There is no pressure and no commitment at your first visit. Just a clear, objective picture of what is going on.
