Meniere’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear that can cause sudden episodes of vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and hearing loss. The exact cause isn’t fully understood, and there’s no known cure. Traditional treatment options often include medication, dietary changes, and in some cases, surgery—but for many people, these only provide partial or temporary relief.

At San Jose Chiropractic in Jacksonville, Dr. Thuraia Owais offers a gentle, non-invasive option that has helped many patients manage Meniere’s disease symptoms naturally: upper cervical chiropractic care. Below are two case studies that show just how effective this approach can be.

Case Study #1 – Relief After Failed Surgical Treatment

A 63-year-old woman had been living with right-sided Meniere’s disease for 10 years. Even after undergoing a vestibular nerve section (a surgery intended to help with vertigo), she continued to struggle with tinnitus, hearing loss of about 40 decibels, and ongoing vertigo.

An Atlas Orthogonal exam revealed a misalignment in her first cervical vertebra (C1). Following a series of precise upper cervical adjustments, her vertigo episodes and other Meniere’s symptoms significantly improved—something surgery alone hadn’t achieved.

This case shows how correcting upper cervical misalignments can play a powerful role in managing Meniere’s disease symptoms.

Case Study #2 – 139 Patients with Head or Neck Trauma

In 2010, researchers studied 139 patients with Meniere’s disease who had all experienced some form of head or neck injury before their symptoms began. X-rays revealed misalignments in the C1 and C2 vertebrae—the top two bones of the neck that protect the brainstem and play a critical role in balance and nervous system function.

Upper cervical chiropractors developed personalized care plans for each patient. After six weeks of adjustments:

  • Vertigo severity ratings dropped from an average of 8.5 to 3.0 (on a 0–10 scale).

  • At one year, ratings decreased further to 2.2.

  • At two years, they dropped again to 1.4.

Out of the 139 patients, 136 reported major improvements in their condition and quality of life.

Why Upper Cervical Care Works for Meniere’s Disease

When the C1 or C2 vertebra is misaligned, it can affect the brainstem and disrupt the communication between the brain, inner ear, and nervous system. This can contribute to symptoms like vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss.

By gently correcting these misalignments, upper cervical chiropractic care can:

  • Reduce pressure on the nerves

  • Improve nervous system function

  • Restore better balance and coordination
