man holding his lower back in painIt’s not surprising that lower back pain is one of the top reasons why people see the chiropractor each year. Here are some common causes of lower back pain:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Fractures
  • Arthritis
  • Disc problems
  • Structural problems, such as spinal stenosis

How Chiropractic May Help

If your neck is off, that’s going to affect everything in your overall health.
Dr. Thuraia Owais (Dr. O) has some patients who come in, and she only adjusts the neck, and then it gets better. For other patients, she needs to work on the sacrum or lower back. So, many people get a lot better just by receiving upper cervical chiropractic. They see results immediately.

The Value of Preventative Care

Just like going to the dentist twice a year for checkups, and brushing your teeth twice a day can help you maintain optimal health, regular chiropractic care can help you enjoy overall health. We tell patients from Day One that chiropractic care is like brushing your teeth. As long as you want to stay healthy, you want preventative care.

“I always tell patients that if the neck is off, no matter how many times I adjust the lower back, it’s not going to help. So the first thing we always do is make sure the C1 is good and straight, and then we’ll see if the rest of the body is overcompensating or actually off,” said Dr. O.

So if you’re coming in with low back pain, we adjust the first bone (the C1), and do a full spine evaluation for everyone followed by X-rays.

Even after the first adjustment, when we don’t do anything else to the hip, patients get better by having that first bone adjusted. For those who don’t and come back for additional care, we check them again. Then if the first bone is good, we start working on the lower back.

How often will I need to come in?

In the beginning, we see everyone for two weeks for at least a month.

Should I keep exercising?

We tell patients to listen to your body and see what it’s telling you. If you’re doing a deadlift and your back hurts when you’re doing the deadlift, that’s your body telling you, “Hey, there’s something going on. Stop doing it.”

So you can keep exercising, but just make sure you’re listening to your body. For example, if you’re walking and your back hurts, then don’t walk in the beginning. Make sure everything is good and stable first.

Do you recommend exercises?

Yes, the exercises help ensure your structure is good. The exercises can help take pressure off the nerves, so you’re not getting out of alignment all the time.

Will I get adjusted at every visit?

Not every person that comes into the practice gets adjusted at each visit. That’s because some people hold their adjustment, which means all the bones are in place. “I don’t need to adjust anything at that point. It doesn’t mean the pain is gone or symptoms are gone. It just means the bones are where they’re supposed to be. Your body wants to heal, and there’s nothing interfering with that healing process,” said Dr. O.

Sometimes it could be just a checkup to ensure you’re good. Dr. O can tell that through a physical examination.
