Headache/Migraine Relief
at San Jose Chiropractic

Most headaches are due to a subluxation in the neck. If that first bone is out of alignment, it’s going to block the signal from the brain to the rest of the body. So if that bone is off, it will affect everything in the body-and your overall health.

How Chiropractic Helps

Chiropractic takes the pressure off the first bone. Through a series of chiropractic adjustments, Dr. O can relieve tension in the upper neck. Normal function to the brain and nervous system can be restored, and you may get relief from your headaches.

Dr. Owais had a patient who experienced 27 migraines a month. After receiving chiropractic care at the practice, the frequency of headaches went down to one migraine every other month or a headache every other month.

Aren’t Headaches Normal?

While headaches are common, they’re not normal. There’s no such thing as a normal headache or migraine. Some patients express that they’ve had headaches their entire life. In those cases, Dr. Thuraia Owais (Dr. O) wants to know what was going on at birth.

That’s because even if no interventions were used during the delivery, the birth experience can be traumatic for a baby. If misalignments at birth aren’t corrected, people can end up with chronic headaches.

Did you know that there are more than 150 types of headaches? These fall into two main categories: primary and secondary headaches.

Primary headaches: These headaches are those that aren’t due to another medical condition. The category includes

  • Cluster headaches
  • Migraine
  • New daily persistent headaches (NDPH)
  • Tension headaches

Secondary headaches: This type of headache is related to another medical condition, including

  • Head injury
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Infection
  • Medication overuse
  • Sinus congestion
  • Trauma
  • Tumor

Some of our patients ask if they should take any medication while under chiropractic care for their headaches. Dr. O lets patients know that that approach merely masks the pain. Many times, whenever you have a headache, and you’re out of alignment, you take a pain reliever. Because you’re masking the symptom, you may start thinking, “I could do whatever I want.” As a result, you could end up hurting yourself more (e.g. lifting heavy weights because you’re temporarily out of pain).

Does it hurt to get adjusted?

No, it doesn’t hurt, and getting adjusted is very safe.

How long will it take to get relief from my headaches?

It depends on how long you have had headaches. If that pressure has been there for a long time, it might take a little longer to heal.

Are there other drug-free ways to reduce headache pain?

You can consider relaxation techniques, acupuncture or yoga to relieve your headache. Also remember to stay well-hydrated, as dehydration can cause headaches.

Can eliminating certain foods help relieve my headaches?

Maybe. For example, dark chocolate, Parmesan cheese, and red wine can cause headaches in many people. If you notice you get a headache after consuming these or other foods and beverages, consider eliminating them from your diet.

When should I seek immediate care for a headache?

If you have a headache that is unusually severe or gradually worsens, you should seek medical attention. You also need immediate care if your headache follows a blow to the head or is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, confusion, reduced alertness, or memory.

Other warning signs include visual changes, slurred speech, weakness, numbness, or seizures. If you experience any of these, it’s vital that you seek immediate medical attention.
