How Chiropractic May Help

Chiropractic care is a gentle and safe approach to address many causes of vertigo. Dr. Thuraia Owais (Dr. O) will first identify whether there is a misalignment in the upper cervical spine. Vertigo is often related to spine problems. To locate a misalignment, we perform a range of objective chiropractic tests.

If a misalignment is detected, we can take 3-D X-rays to determine the precise angle and direction of the misaligned vertebrae. Once the area and angle of misalignment are located, she will create a gentle, non-invasive plan for correcting the spinal misalignments.

Once the upper cervical spine is realigned, your body can repair the inflamed soft tissue and restore function to the inner ear and vestibular nerve. Our goal at San Jose Chiropractic is to address vertigo naturally.

If you don’t have any additional complications, chiropractic correction should resolve one of the most common causes of vertigo and vertigo-associated disorders.

Common Symptoms

Vertigo can range from being bothersome to an indication that a serious underlying condition is present. While the most common, dizziness is not the only symptom linked to this condition. Here are some other symptoms of vertigo that often accompany dizziness:

  • Blurry vision or concentration difficulties
  • Hearing problems, particularly in one ear
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Difficulty maintaining balance
  • Feeling exhausted or constantly tired
  • Double vision

What Causes Vertigo?

Vertigo usually begins with issues that involve the head, inner ear and spine. These areas play a critical role in how the body orients itself and maintains its balance. Vertigo is often due to a disruption in the signals transmitted from the nerves of the spine to the brain. When signals that would typically keep us balanced become distorted and jumbled, symptoms of dizziness can arise.

Here are some of the most common causes of vertigo:

  • Severe headaches (e.g. migraines)
  • Chronic earaches or damage to the inner ear
  • Auto accidents that cause joint/ligament damage throughout the spine
  • Lack of blood flow to the brain
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Misalignments of the vertebrae in the neck

Other Tips for Managing Vertigo

Dehydration is detrimental to the body in many ways, and can cause vertigo symptoms to flare up. Always ensure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Be aware of situations where you lose more water than normal, like working out at the gym or being outside on a hot summer day.

Sleep deprivation can trigger feelings of vertigo. If you’re experiencing vertigo for the first time, it might be due to stress or lack of sleep. That’s why it’s important to get adequate sleep each night and manage your stress levels.

If you have low vitamin D levels, your vertigo symptoms could worsen. Fish, egg yolks, fortified milk and orange juice are all good sources of vitamin D. You can also ask your doctor to check your vitamin D levels, so you know if you need more in your diet or if you need a supplement.
